I started my first week back at Corporate America. Just as an FYI, I am a CPA and work for the Health Care Services Industry. So, for the most part, it is a fairly standard corporate culture. As such, it is a fairly standard dress code as well. For that reason, how do you really feel
- Comfortable in your work clothes all day
- Put your best foot forward
- Maintain Individuality
How do you fee comfortable in your work clothes all day? Let’s face it, your at work a lot and I think it’s important to feel comfortable when you’re there so much. I sit at a desk mostly, but even my shoes have to be comfortable.
I believe one of the things you have to decide is what type of clothes are you actually comfortable in? What fabrics feel good? For me, I am very comfortable in dresses. I wear it a lot, especially now that we are in the summer months.
As far as fabrics, I prefer some type of cotton blend. But to be honest, when I buy clothes, my only criteria is that they feel good. I hate things that are “staticy” as well. I don’t necessarily limit myself to a particular fabric. Additionally, I live in wedge heels at work. They’re classic, put together, and get me through the day unscathed.
What does it really mean to put your best foot forward? One thing about the corporate world is that they do have a dress code. I do think that it’s a good idea to adhere to it. Additionally, it’s about wearing what makes you feel confident. I don’t believe that you have to go with the latest and greatest or the most expensive. I buy most things on sale (preferably extra 40% or 50% off). It actually makes me feel more confident knowing that I didn’t spend an outrageous amount of money on my clothes (although what constitutes expensive is relative, right?) I think that it’s all about what is important to you.
For instance, I paired a $13 top with an about $350 (roughly) pair of Burberry shoes. It’s just what I really like. We have jean days at work and these are from Gap Factory probably around $20-25. The point is, it’s all over the place, and that’s okay
How do you maintain individuality when there is a dress code in place? I’ve found that interjecting patterns and interesting shapes in my work wear has been really fun.
The Polka Dots is super fun. I also love that this dress is peplum shaped. But, the color is still fairly classic in navy. I’m also wearing a classic loafer. I actually adore this, just because it is so me and I know I felt good that day in it!
Just because you work for corporate doesn’t mean that you should stop expressing yourself. I think there is a way to do that, while still functioning within the corporate culture. I hope some of you can relate to this and find it somewhat helpful
